Review: Persona 3 FES
Posted on Apr 25 2008 3:48 AM by adnana

If you're a role-playing fan who foolishly slept on last year's phenomenal Persona 3, you inadvertently made a wise decision -- now you can experience FES, a substantially enhanced yet value-priced new version. The core game hasn't really changed: By night, you're leading a ragtag party of demon-summoning school kids through a massive multifloor labyrinth, but your daily classwork and social engagements play out like a classic adventure game. The same sophisticated art design, addictive Persona-forging system, and expertly streamlined combat engine return, and a host of new story elements and side quests flesh out the journey.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

Sega and BioWare reps were on hand at Nintendo's recent press event to show off Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the upcoming DS role-playing game starring Sonic the Hedgehog. The unlikely pairing of publisher and developer, not to mention subject matter, initially left many scratching their heads. While it's no mean feat to properly show off a meaty BioWare RPG, our look at the game offered a good idea of how the promising title is shaping up.

The game's story is being kept fairly under wraps at the moment. The only thing we got from Sega reps is the basic setup which, unsurprisingly, isn't exactly reaching too far beyond your typical Sonic storyline. Basically, Sonic is vacationing (in some of his rare downtime), but one panicked message from Tails and one kidnapping later, an adventure ensues. As with any RPG worth its dropped items, Sonic Chronicles won't be sending the hedgehog into danger by himself. You can plan on having three other familiar faces along for the ride, each with unique attributes you'll need over the course of your quest. One thing we can say after trying the brief demo is that you can plan on doing a lot of talking, but that's par for the course in any RPG.

Final Fantasy IV set for DS remake

Final Fantasy faithful have been waiting on an oft-rumored remake of the landmark seventh installment in the series for years. While Square Enix hasn't seen fit to even announce such a project, it has kept up a steady stream of Final Fantasy spin-offs and remakes to keep fans busy in the meantime.

Today the publisher confirmed the North American release of the latest such remake, Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS. Set to arrive on retailers' shelves July 22, the game will feature 3D graphics, CG cutscenes with voice-overs, a remixed score by series composer Nobuo Uematsu, touchscreen support, and a multiplayer head-to-head battle mode.

A Super Nintendo version of Final Fantasy IV was originally released in North America in 1991. However, because only one of the first three titles had been localized, it was dubbed Final Fantasy II upon arrival.

Orcs & Elves Review
Posted on Mar 10 2008 11:42 AM by adnana

When you think of casual games, first-person dungeon crawls probably aren't what spring to mind. They can be slow, difficult, and--if the level designers don't play their cards right--downright boring. id Software showed that this didn't have to be the case by releasing Orcs & Elves for mobile phone platforms, and now the game has made its way to the Nintendo DS. It doesn't hide its simplistic roots very well and the story is paper-thin, but it nevertheless provides quick, accessible fun for those who would normally be intimidated by your garden-variety, rat-infested dungeon crawl.

Playing as the elf Elli, you're tasked with plumbing the bowels of Mount Zharrkarag, where orcs have overrun a tribe of dwarves. Of course, as the fantasy template requires, there is greater evil afoot. Accompanied by a talking wand named Ellon, you'll find yourself going back and forth between delving deeper into the mountain to slay beasts and returning to the top to barter for supplies with the resident dragon, Gaya. What little plot progression there is presents itself through dialogue between Ellon and the ghosts of dwarves floating throughout the dungeons. You'll also come across scattered notes to help fill out what happened before you arrived. Ultimately, you're more likely to remember some choice interactions with an eternally drunken ghost as opposed to the lackluster plot.

Iron Lore, creator of the top-notch role-playing game Titan Quest, has shut its doors

The Maynard, Mass. company officially shuttered on February 19 this year, unable to secure funding for its next project, according to an announcement on the studio's website.

The firm blamed the lack of funding on "several unrelated events." Iron Lore did not disclose specifics.

Iron Lore released the THQ-published Titan Quest and its expansion, Titan Quest: Immortal Throne, in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Both of the PC-exclusive titles were well-received by critics.

The company thanked its fans and THQ in its statement, calling its publisher a "great partner."

Brian Sullivan and Paul Chieffo founded Iron Lore in October 2000.

Harmonix has posted an open letter to future rockers asking what they'd like to see in their upcoming title Rock Band. Other than letting us know that the Rock Band guitar will be modeled after the Fender Stratocaster, we really don't know much more about the title. Obviously, the song list isn't complete yet and they need our help. We'll give them song ideas as long as they promise to keep the peripheral prices in check.....

MySims' Simple Pleasures

While Will Wright labours among stars and supernovae, wrestling to force life itself into a manageable shape, back on Earth developers at EA’s Redwood Shores studios are struggling to get his most successful creation back on track. Although the cuddly toy domesticity of MySims may seem to be a billion light years away from the world-conquering bacteria of Spore, the projects have more in common than you might suspect. Each necessitates an inward regression to the very purest essence of an idea, and each acknowledges evolution as the key to survival.....
