NPD figures for April have finally come in and this time, it's a close call between Xbox 360 and PS3. According to the NPD, PS3 sold 187,071 hardware units last month, which represents a year-over-year sales growth of 127%. More importantly, software sales have gone up 410% from last year, with over 2 million software units sold in April. A large portion of that figure comes from Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold over one million copies on PS3 in North America.

SCEA's Peter Dille comments on GTA IV sales
Posted on May 13 2008 8:38 AM by Aziz

According to Level Up, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been outselling the PS3 at nearly a 2-1 ratio, with 64% of sales going to Microsoft's platform, and 36% going to Sony's. Granted, this data comes from first week sales at GameStop, which will skew towards early-adopting hardcore gamers. Many had suggested that GTA was so strongly associated with the PlayStation brand that PS3 sales would boom from the release of the new GTA. Could this initial sales data suggest otherwise?

Deal of the Evening: Buy two Blu-ray movies, get one free
Posted on May 08 2008 8:14 AM by Aziz

It's another Amazon Blu-ray sale bonanza! Never as awesome as the buy one, get one free sale from long ago, they regularly stick a buy two, get one free sale on select Blu-ray titles. This is a decent opportunity to expand your library.

Well, we'd like to say that, but we couldn't find three titles worth purchasing. A lot have been around for a while, so most people have them already. Still, if you've been waiting for a sale to bolster your library, check out what they've got and let us know what you think!

Deal of the Day: PS3 40GB for £230 [UPDATE]
Posted on May 08 2008 8:10 AM by Aziz

It's interesting, now, to look back on the PS3's troubled first year. People complained that it had no games (a criticism only the criminally insane would dare make nowadays), that Blu-ray wasn't a proven format (which has since been proved) and that the price was too high. Now, however, Play.com have dropped the 40GB PS3 to its lowest price ever, beating out the competition by £70. You can head on over to the site right now and pick one up for only £230. That includes free shipping. Bargain!

Buy.com is currently selling DualShock 3 controllers for only $45, shipped -- that's $10 off the regular MSRP. For many that have been waiting to upgrade to the rumble-ready PS3 controller, this is a pretty good deal. If you're lucky enough to not pay sales tax, your buck will go even a little bit further.

GTA IV drives PS3 sales, PS3 momentum picking up
Posted on May 05 2008 9:12 AM by Aziz

According to SCEA, the high demand for Grand Theft Auto IV on the PlayStation 3 is driving sales for Sony's system exponentially just within the first 24 hours of the game's release. Senior Merchandising VP of GameStop Corp., Bob McKenzie, chimed in backing up the claim on the retail side of things: "From our position, the launch of GTA IV has been tremendous in driving traffic to our stores, as well as providing a vigorous lift in PS3 console sales over this time last week. We attribute the growth to a huge fan base of PS2 owners who see this title as the trigger for the PS3 upgrade they've been planning."

And playing the part of the jilted lover in today's episode of As The Game Industry Turns is Infogrames, as the company confirmed that while it recently offered to purchase Eidos-owner SCi, the Atari-parent saw its bid turned aside "at this stage."

The timing of the news is particularly interesting, given that SCi last week said that it had rejected an unspecified acquisition offer, though it remains unknown if the publisher was talking about Infogrames or some other mystery suitor.

There's only one thing better than getting something for nothing. However, since it's unlikely that someone is going to deliver us a life-size Toblerone, we'll settle for Paradox Interactive's news that the Swedish game company is releasing its game engine into the wild as a free download over GamersGate.

The Xbox 360 turns a profit ... again

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD) – responsible for everything from the Xbox 360 to the Zune – has once again posted a net quarterly profit. What's behind the good news? "Xbox platform and PC game revenue increased $418 million or 85% primarily as a result of increased Xbox 360 console sales, Xbox 360 video game sales, and Xbox Live revenue."

Revenues are great and all, but what about profit? The EDD posted an operating profit of $89 million for the third fiscal quarter, and an operating income of $614 million for the nine-month period (a marked improvement from the $746 million loss during the same period last year).

"Super Smash Brothers Brawl along with a greater supply of inventory helped the Wii to capture the highest single month unit sales of any platform outside the holiday timeframe," she added.

Over 2 million PS3s sold in Japan
Posted on Apr 12 2008 1:03 PM by adnana

The PS3 has sold over 2 million units in Japan, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting. Media Create's numbers show the PS3 having sold 1,999,969, just 31 short of 2 million, as of April 6th. During the week since then the target has been reached, showing strong sales for the PS3 in Japan.

It may not be close to beating out the scarily popular Wii, but the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in the region by a ratio of almost 4:1. With huge titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Final Fantasy XIII series still to come, we expect Japanese sales to only increase further in the future.

Alone in the Dark will sell 2-3 million units this fiscal year
Posted on Apr 11 2008 4:44 AM by adnana

Infogrames CEO, David Gardner, tells Reuters he believes Alone in the Dark will sell two to three million copies this fiscal year. That means that, between its June 24 release and next March, the title needs to perform better than a game like BioShock. Given the fact that the title is being released on Wii, PS2, Xbox 360 and PC (PS3 is "sometime in 2008"), it just may hit that projection when combining all the systems ... maybe.

Gardner's currently focused on getting Infogrames / Atari to stop hemorrhaging money, and has Directeur Général Délégué Phil Harrison and friends looking to "get a business plan together that gets [Atari] to a break-even level." Unsurprisingly, Gardner couldn't give specifics on when he expects that to happen.
