Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios revealed a glimpse of the first creative gaming experience for the PS3, LittleBigPlanet, at the GDC yesterday. Developed by Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet is a PS3 community-based game which is aimed at creating a new gaming world.

It’s more than just gaming

Players will meet on a blue and green planet which is scattered with individual plots. They will use their character’s abilities to play, create and share what they build with gamers around the world through the PLAYSTATION Network.

Players will start by learning more about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. Brainpower and teamwork will be necessary if the player is to successfully explore, collect items and solve puzzles. Players’ creative skills will grow as they explore and soon they will be ready to create and modify their surroundings.

Explore, create, share

Characters can move anything in this 3D landscape, they can design, shape and build objects or even entire locations for other players to view and play. All of these skills can be learned by simply playing the game, there is no complicated level editor. According to SCE, “creativity is part of the game play experience and playing is part of the creative experience.” Players can choose to make their world open or secretive and they can choose whether to invite players from the LittleBigPlanet community to explore their patch.

How exactly does the game work?

There is no set solution to playing LittleBigPlanet, you play the game, learn the skills and find your own way to play the game, however you want to. Players can create their own content by customizing their character and building their own locations. Players can rearrange anything in this landscape. Players can build, move, create and collaborate and even choose to share this content with friends or invite the whole world to visit.

Features

LittleBigPlanet offers many key features to players. Players can craft their own individual experience because there is not just one way to play the game. There are unlimited possibilities for players to create content with players being able to customize everything from their characters to the landscape and their own little patch on LittleBigPlanet. As players progress in the game they will discover and win new skills and items.

LittleBigPlanet will provide initial levels but other levels will be user-generated on a global scale. LittleBigPlanet will change everyday as players create individual levels. Players can engage in online as well as offline multiplayer modes where they can play alone, work as a team or compete with other players. The LittleBigPlanet community will include player comments, rankings and easy communication.
