Wii started off the new year by outselling both PS3 and Xbox 360, according to preliminary NPD Group data. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that not only did Nintendo Wii dominate the month of January, but rivals PS3 and Xbox 360 couldn't even outsell PlayStation 2.
Nintendo's next-gen console sold 436,000 units to start the year off with a bang. Coming in at number two is Sony's PS2, which didn't quite make the 300K mark with 299,000 consoles.
Next is Xbox 360 at three with 294,000 units for January, and coming it fourth is PlayStation 3 with 244,000 consoles.
"I do think that we're selling to additional and different customers," compared with the Microsoft and Sony consoles, said Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing at Nintendo of America. "We've had an incredibly healthy start and we think there's going to be a pretty long tail on this product."
Nintendo's Kaplan said the company would have been able to sell more in January had it been able to manufacture enough. Pachter said he was surprised Nintendo wasn't able to supply more than it did. It has continued to experience shortages, but Nintendo says shipments are ongoing and continuous.
